Holotropic Breathwork – an Integration of Psychotherapy and Spirituality
Opening and Healing through Altered States of Consciousness
Abstract
Holotropic breathing is a method of transpersonal psychology and psychotherapy that activates the extraordinary potential of expanded states of consciousness. By means of accelerated breathing, evocative music and process-oriented bodywork, a process of intensive self-exploration is set in motion that leads to lasting therapeutic effects. Accordingly, self-healing powers are mobilized in the practitioner, constricting life patterns are dissolved, and dormant abilities are awakened. Life-story themes including prenatal experiences and transpersonal influencing factors are updated in these sessions and made fruitful for spiritual insights. The healing integration of mental and spiritual processes strengthens a person’s trust in his or her inner wisdom and enables him or her to face the challenges of life more openly, courageously and calmly.
