I – who am I?
Abstract
The trend towards self-optimization, which has been growing for some time and can go as far as self-exhaustion, is contrasted with self-becoming. Instead of a quantitative “more”, the focus is on immersing oneself more deeply into the inner self. This deeper I, or essential self, has nothing to do with the “ego” but is the core of our true being. The Desert Fathers already suggested a contemplative path that leads to the inner center, where unity with God can be experienced and witnessed. C. G. Jung described the journey to the self as a process of individuation, in which consciousness gradually converges with the divine destiny of becoming fully “my self”. For Jung, individuation does not represent an increasing distance from the divine source, but rather the process of becoming ever more whole and, as a result, ever more conscious of the unity of humanity and divinity. The author shows how this God presence can be brought into every movement, into every action of everyday life, in this individual way. Using Bible verses, he shows that deep wisdom, combined with valuable instructions and great application potential, can be found in the Bible to further the awakening process.
